Punjab University, established in 1882, stands as one of India's oldest and most prestigious institutions. As envisioned in the Punjab University Act of 1947, the University is incorporated for imparting education in Arts, Letters, Science and the learned professions.

1961 — Foundation
Punjab University was established in Chandigarh following India's partition, continuing the legacy of higher education in Arts, Letters, Science, and the learned professions with a vision to advance learning and original research in independent India.
1970s — Campus Development
Established its sprawling 550-acre campus in Chandigarh with modern facilities including advanced laboratories, extensive libraries, museums, and residential facilities. This marked the beginning of a new era of infrastructure development.
1980s-90s — Expansion
Witnessed massive academic expansion with the establishment of numerous departments, research centers, and affiliated colleges. Introduction of interdisciplinary studies and strengthening of research capabilities across sciences and humanities.
2000s — Research Hub
Emerged as a leading research institution with cutting-edge facilities in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and environmental sciences. Established collaborations with international universities and received prestigious research grants and recognitions.
2025 — Excellence Today
Continuing the legacy of 60+ years with over 75 teaching and research departments, world-class infrastructure, and a commitment to advancing knowledge. Recognized nationally and internationally for academic excellence and research contributions.
